Satellite radar interferometry for mine subsidence monitoring

Australia is one of the world’s leading mineral resource extraction and exporting nations. Underground mining can cause ground surface displacement, which may in turn have serious impacts on the environment or man-built facilities. This paper describes the results of a study into the feasibility of surface subsidence (caused by underground coal mining) monitoring using differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR). Both Cand L-band radar images acquired by ERS-1/2 and JERS-1 satellites have been processed. With the aid of Geographic Information System software, the DInSAR results have been compared against ground survey data and other information (such as mine plans). A RMS error of 1.4cm of a DInSAR result derived from JERS-1 data has been obtained.
